Website Update 11.8.2009

Well today my site is down... I am assuming it is FreeHostia that is down and that my site will be back within a few hours or so. This is the 503 error message I get:

"Service Temporarily Unavailable
The server is temporarily unable to service your request due to maintenance downtime or capacity problems. Please try again later.
Apache/1.3.33 Server at wendybrittain.com Port 80"

FreeHostia has a 99.9% guarentee uptime, but from what I've read it doesn't really happen...

I know it was up yesterday, and I haven't changed anything and nothing should have expired... so I will check on it tomorrow and if t's not back up I will look into what else could be happening with it.

Anyways, I have been wanting to work on it more, and have gotten introduced to some new technologies that I am very excited about so I am looking forward to improving my site in the very near future!!

Someone has been spamming my guestbook to pieces over the last couple of days... selling 'pharmaceuticals'. Luckily the guestbook app has a setting to require my approval before new comments are posted to the site.

I didn't want to have to turn anything like that on for my guestbook... I think immediate feedback is important for encouraging people to comment.

I honestly didn't think I would ever have a spam problem with my little site, but anything can happen I suppose...

Well, I got my dancing WoW character to work again on my About Me page... don't know what happened with that one... I still need to update her gear and make a new .gif out of her, but I'm still glad she's working the way she is again :)

I added a quotes page to my site.

I love quotes. I love reading them, thinking about their meaning, or laughing at them... I like how some of them make me think and contemplate sometimes. There seems to be a perfect quote for every situation out there, and for some reason, it's fun for me to find them :)

On a side note... I noticed my dancing WoW character on my About Me page has quit working... and I haven't figured out why yet. I have been meaning to make a new one anyways since she has hit 80 and has all new gear. My problem is that I haven't found a new model viewer that works on Windows 7. I had a hard time finding a version that worked on Vista! Is the model viewer not going to be updated anymore? I don't know...

But my son's computer still has Windows XP, so I will likely resort to using the model viewer on his computer soon. I miss having my main dancing on my site :)

I have more yet to add, but it is late tonight already...

I have been working extensively lately on web apps... Not my own website exactly, but on document apps, Twitter apps, Blog apps, and on systems that can connect them all together.

One cool app I found was Twitterfeed. It connects to your blog, periodically checks for updates, and if it finds a new post, it will generate a small URL as a link to the post and post a short message with the URL to your Twitter account. It is very customizable as to how often it checks, customizable messages, and small URL types - like tinyurl or bit.ly.

Secondly, I have desided to break up my current blog into three blogs - a personal blog, a technical blog, and a blog for my website updates.

During the creation and customization of these blogs, I came across FeedBurner. I have heard of it of course but had no idea what it does. I still don't I guess; I haven't gotten to really do much with it but just from the tad I have experienced so far, it looks very data and statistic driven. It can make your blog totally compatible with different formats like RSS, XML, Atom and others, and it can track links users click on in your blog, generate automatic newsletters from your posts...

And I believe that is just the tip of the iceberg.

Not that I need really any of that functionality, but it is interesting to me; I love learning how those types of things work.

Then I have also gotten involved with Google Apps. I love everything Google has made so far, so I wanted to try this out on my domain as well. I have had a few issues so far, which I have blogged about in my new tech blog, but nothing too bad yet...

So there it is. I've been working on a lot of web stuff, just not my website. But that should change soon...

And this post turned out a lot longer and technical than I had planned; maybe I should post it in my Tech blog...

I have finally found a good, free, easily customizable photo gallery to use called SimpleViewer. Check it out on my Photo page! :)

..which motivated me to work on my site again. I like to anyways, it's fun for me but I just hadn't gotten around to it lately...

I also hadn't blogged lately which is disappointing in a way... I have started a few blogs, but then didn't finish them... now I doubt I would.

Ah well... can't change the past, just work on a better future!! :)
